Root Canal | Dental Spa in Houston TX

Root canal therapy is a medically necessary dental procedure for patients with severe dental decay. If the bacterial infection reaches the pulp chamber or the root canal of your tooth, you may need a root canal to protect the tooth. If you don’t go through with your root canal, you may eventually need a tooth extraction. URBN Dental  is a state-of-the-art dental center specializing in cutting-edge root canal procedures for patients across Katy and Houston.

What is Root Canal Therapy?

A root canal is a dental procedure that removes the infected pulp tissues, nerve endings, and blood vessels from the tooth’s center. If your tooth is severely infected, the endodontist or dentist must remove the infected pulp tissues and connective tissues to prevent the infection from spreading. A root canal therapy is usually a last resort to save the tooth. Your root canal dentist will perform thorough x-rays to determine if you need a root canal in Houston, TX.

Why is the Root Canal Needed?

A root canal is needed when the soft inner tissues of the tooth, known as the pulp, are infected or inflamed because of bacterial activity. The outer components of your teeth can remain intact even if the internal pulp tissues are diseased or dead. If you don’t remove the infected pulp tissues and disinfect the root canal, the infection may spread to the entire tooth and the surrounding teeth, thus necessitating tooth extraction. A root canal is a last resort to save your tooth from complete decay.

Your Root Canal Procedure in Houston

  • Step 1: Local Anesthesia

Your dentist will apply a numbing medicine in the area around the infected tooth. You might feel a mild stinging sensation, but that sensation passes quickly. You won’t feel any pain.

  • Step 2: Pulp Removal

The dentist will drill an access hole into the infected tooth and remove all the pulp tissues, connective tissues, and blood vessels. The dentist will also use special files to clean the canal.

  • Step 3: Antibiotic Treatment

The dentist will apply a topical antibiotic to prevent reinfection. After applying the antibiotic treatment, the dentist will seal the root canal with gutta-percha and provide oral antibiotics.

  • Step 4: Temporary Filling

The dentist will apply a temporary filling on the region to protect it from further damage. The dentist will also take impressions of your teeth, which will be sent to a laboratory.

  • Step 5: Dental Crown

During the final session, the fabricated dental crown is placed on your treated tooth. The dentist will file the tooth down to a small stub to place the dental crown and enhance its strength.

Root Canal FAQs

What happens the day after a root canal?

You may experience mild soreness, tenderness, and sensitivity around the affected tooth because of soft tissue inflammation. The discomfort should dissipate within a few days.

What should I avoid doing with a root canal?

You should avoid eating immediately after your root canal procedure. Your mouth will be numb after a root canal, so there’s a higher chance that you may bite yourself while eating. You should avoid eating hard and crunchy foods after the procedure and give your treated tooth enough time to heal and recover, which should take a few days.

You should also avoid eating the following foods until you receive a dental crown: very hot or cold foods, sticky foods, chewy steaks, hard foods, nuts, and crunchy foods. Your tooth is weakened after a root canal, so you should avoid foods that can add pressure to the tooth. Once you receive a dental crown, you can eat whatever you want.

How long do root canals take to settle?

Most patients only need a few days to recover after root canal therapy. You may experience some soreness or discomfort after the treatment for about 48 hours, following which the discomfort should fade away.

Are there any restrictions after a root canal?

You should avoid eating directly after the procedure until the numbness wears off. But you can resume most of your daily activities and work immediately.

Can I brush my teeth after root canal?

Once the anesthetic wears off, you can resume brushing your teeth like you normally do.

How long can I wait to get a crown after a root canal?

The dental crown should be placed as soon after the root canal procedure as possible. The longer you go without a dental crown, the higher the risk of the weakened tooth being damaged. If the weakened tooth is damaged after a root canal, it must be removed. That’s why your root canal dentist must provide a dental crown as soon as possible.

Why does a root canal take 3 visits?

The root canal procedure may take two or three sessions. The infected pulp tissues are removed during the first session, and the disinfectant is applied. During the second session, the root canal is filled, and an impression is taken for your dental crown. The final dental crown can be placed on the second session or the third session, depending on whether you can get same-day dental crowns.
